How to Select the Right Paper Machine Felt

The basis weight of a press felt directly affects its water-holding capacity, dewatering efficiency, and service life. Higher paper machine speeds require a suitably lower basis weight, whereas high paper grammage, high linear pressure, and higher vacuum levels call for a suitably higher basis weight. Excessive basis weight increases the felt’s moisture content, reduces machine speed, and accelerates contamination; conversely, insufficient basis weight may lead to excessive air permeability, unstable vacuum operation, poor wear resistance, and more pronounced felt marking.

For paper machines featuring high vacuum levels and effective washing conditions, felts with relatively high air permeability can be used; for processes involving raw materials with high impurity content that are prone to clogging, felts with moderate air permeability are preferred; and for high-speed paper machines, air permeability should be appropriately increased to reduce fluid resistance. Additionally, the felt’s resistance to contamination, chemical corrosion, and high temperatures should be selected based on the specific paper grade and operating conditions.
